Course Description

This is a comprehensive primer on practically everything a photographer needs to know in order to begin shooting with purpose. Think of this as the gateway to our more advanced classes. Photography1 will thoroughly cover the use of aperture and shutter, numerous exposure strategies, complete focus and depth-of-field control, and the difficulties involved in motion capture, This class will also serve as an introduction to composition control, aesthetic theory, and viewer psychology. Throughout this course, your progress will be carefully monitored by the instructor and your habits continually assessed and adapted.

Who should take this:

Practically everyone. This class is designed for people with no previous knowledge of photography, so beginners should feel entirely welcome. However students with more advanced needs are also encouraged to begin with Photography1, as this course gradually expands to include a lot of intermediate skills, and toward its conclusion, this class begins to introduce some moderately advanced techniques.

Upon completion:

Students should expect to possess a solid understanding of the equipment and terminology involved in photography, as well as how to employ many technical and compositional strategies.

Course Description:

This more advanced class concentrates on the application of the principles discussed in Photography1 toward aesthetic and creative goals, including advanced composition theory, assessment and development of photographic style, and a comprehensive understanding of photography as both an art form and a method for communication.

Who should take this:

This course is designed for those who already feel confident with basic photographic techniques, but still wish to develop a creative direction and allow for their technical abilities to be refined. A strong knowledge of lenses and exposure is required, so if you are still in the intermediate stage we recommend you begin with Photography1.

Upon completion:

Students should expect to possess a better understanding of how to control every visual aspect within their photographs, as well as how to control the manner in which their photographs are perceived.

Studio Lighting I ($299) 

Course Description:

This course introduces the various components of photography within a studio setting, including the use of strobes and various lighting accessories, advanced metering strategies, portrait lighting, and how to combine the use of artifical flash with existing ambient light,

Who should take this:

Students who wish to shoot portraits, weddings, or products in a professional and serious manner, as well as artists and hobbyists who wish to expand their knowledge of how light can be understood and controlled. A strong understanding of cameras and exposure is required for this course, so if you are not totally confident in your knowledge of basic photographic technique, we recommend you begin with Photography1.

Upon completion:

Students will have a solid working knowledge of both the equipment and the strategies involved in commercial and creative studio photography.

Documentary I ($299)

Course Description:

This “editorial” course emphasizes the construction of visual narrative. Students will learn the basic structure and syntax involved in conveying information to a viewer so that they may then control precisely how that viewer understands their scene. An introductory history of documentary photography is also included.

Who should take this:

This class is designed for students more interested in telling a concrete story than expressing a creative idea or experimenting with techinque. A strong knowledge of cameras and exposure is required for this course, so if you are not totally confident in your knowledge of basic photographic technique, we recommend you begin with Photography1.

Upon Completion:

Students will understand the technical and editorial decisions involved in creating an entire journalistic photo story, or just a single informative image.

Private Instruction (Pricing Varies)

For students with difficult schedules, or for those who simply prefer not to learn in a group environment, ASOP offers private, one-on-one instruction in order to suit your scheduling needs. The fee is $100 for the first hour and $50 for each additional hour during that session. To schedule a private session, please contact the studio directly.
